The proposed project will take comprehensive actions based on a systemic approach and will use the concept of ecohydrology to rehabilitate Arturowek reservoirs, which is one of the primary recreational sites for Lodz population. The project will propose an innovative approach to 1) consolidation of knowledge about the functioning of urban water ecosystems; 2) planning and decision-making methods as used in the management of urban water ecosystems, 3) the developed and utilized ecohydrologic technologies and their synergy in order to accomplish goals prescribed in the EU Directives (Directive 2006/7/WE on water quality management in bathing sites, the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/WE), and 4) a system for training, dissemination of knowledge and cooperation based on joint actions of a multi-stakeholder platform.

Detailed goals:

  1. Development of a specific conceptual program of activities for rehabilitating the recreational reservoirs in Arturowek (Lodz);
  2. Implementation of the developed program of activities and execution of program-related investments;
  3. Using a model system of reservoir rehabilitation (exemplary) in teaching and training;
  4. Preparation of a system operation manual;
  5. Development of a framework rehabilitation strategy for other reservoirs and rivers in the Lodz region;

Results:

  1. Improved quality of the natural environment and of water and recreational aspects in the recreation reservoirs „Arturowek”;
  2. Application of ecohydrological methods to sustainable water management in urban areas among the society and decision makers;
  3. Established basis for the rehabilitation of key water systems in Lodz as a instrument for implementation of Water Framework Directive EC.
